Introduction
Cystic fibrosis is a recessive and lethal genetic disease that commonly affects Caucasians (1 in 2,500 births in Europe) and for which there is no cure. The excess mucus promotes bronchial infections with bacteria, which generates a chronic inflammatory response, resulting in a progressive loss of respiratory function until the death of the patient. Antibiotic treatment is often rendered ineffective due to the appearance of multi-resistant bacterial strains and difficult access of these antibiotics due to the thick layer of mucus. Thus, the management of respiratory infections represents a major issue for the health and quality of life of patients with cystic fibrosis.
Two researchers from Toulouse and Montpellier, Drs. Céline Cougoule and Virginie Molle, initiating research projects on infections associated with cystic fibrosis, decided to collaborate in the joint organization of a symposium on the theme of respiratory infections associated with cystic fibrosis.
The objective of the “First Symposium of the Occitanie Network on Cystic Fibrosis: respiratory infection” is to bring together academic and clinical experts from the Occitania region around prestigious European and national guests in order to create a network of regional expertise and stimulate scientific collaborations. This symposium will also give young researchers from the Occitania region the opportunity to participate in the organization of a scientific event or to present their work.
During this first symposium, around 120 participants are expected from various research institutes and hospitals in Toulouse, Montpellier, and other regions of France.
